TPMS and TPRS (Self-Inflation): Different Ways to Comply with Regulation 141

Noticias

The European regulation ECE-R141.01, which came into effect on July 7, 2024, requires all newly registered semi-trailers weighing over 3.5 tons to be equipped with tire pressure monitoring systems.

Although TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) was initially identified as the primary technology for meeting this requirement, the TPRS (Tire Pressure Replenishment System), or self-inflation system, has now been included as a valid and effective alternative.

What is the Self-Inflation System (TPRS)?

The TPRS is a technology designed to automatically maintain a semi-trailer’s tires at their optimal pressure. It works by supplying air to the tires from the air tank via a pressure multiplier, ensuring that pressure levels remain within the recommended range.

Benefits of the Self-Inflation System (TPRS)

– Consistent Pressure: Keeps tires at their optimal level at all times.
– Risk Reduction: Minimizes issues caused by low pressure, such as blowouts or premature wear.
– Warning Alerts: Notifies the driver via an LED light on the left side guard of the semi-trailer and on the truck’s dashboard if there is a pressure loss.
– Regulatory Compliance: Recognized as a valid alternative under ECE-R141.01.

Compliance with ECE-R141.01

Regulation ECE-R141.01 aims to improve road safety, reduce fuel consumption, and extend tire lifespan. To comply, semi-trailers must incorporate systems that ensure continuous tire pressure monitoring.

Options for Compliance

– TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System): Detects pressure loss in real-time and identifies the affected tire, especially when the vehicle is equipped with SmartBoard.

– Self-Inflation System (TPRS): Automatically maintains proper pressure and issues general alerts in case of pressure problems, but does not specify which tire is affected.

– Both Systems Combined: If requested by the customer, TPMS and TPRS can be installed together for enhanced monitoring.

Advantages of TPRS Over TPMS

– Direct Compliance: The TPRS is recognized as a valid solution under the regulation, meaning semi-trailers equipped with it do not need to install TPMS.

– Preventive Maintenance: By automatically maintaining optimal pressure, the system reduces the risk of incidents.

– Flexibility: While not mandatory, TPMS can be combined with TPRS for a more comprehensive solution.

Which is the Best Option: TPRS or TPMS??

At Tisvol, we include the TPMS as standard, so you won’t have to worry about compliance when choosing our semi-trailers.

However, the TPRS self-inflation system is also a great alternative for meeting ECE-R141.01, providing an efficient and safe solution for semi-trailer owners. In addition to ensuring legal compliance, it helps optimize tire performance and enhance road safety.

If you are looking for a way to adapt your fleet to the new regulatory requirements without installing TPMS, the TPRS self-inflation system is the ideal choice.
